Vernix, the most natural care!
What is vernix caseosa?

Hello family! Here we are again writing for you. The topic we have chosen today is that whitish and sticky substance that you have surely seen on your little ones at birth. Nature is wise and that substance that covers the little body of babies has very important properties inside and outside of mom's belly.

Vernix caseosa is a super effective natural barrier that cares for the child's skin during pregnancy and during its first days in the world. It all starts inside.

What happens inside the uterus?

Vernix develops in the womb just as the outermost layer of the baby's skin is forming. At this time its function is to provide a dry environment, isolate the skin from moisture and amniotic fluid. And that's not all! At this stage it serves to protect the baby from possible intrauterine infections and at the time of delivery it works as a natural lubricant protecting the baby's body.

Now then... at birth, the baby completely changes its habitat and faces so many physiological changes, that vernix plays a fundamental role in its first days of life.

What happens to vernix outside the womb?

Breathing, eating, eliminating waste, and regulating temperature and hydration are some of the things a newborn must adjust to. In this complex process, if we leave the vernix on the child's skin, it contributes to various vital functions. It acts as a barrier to prevent water loss from the skin and prevents it from drying out and peeling. In addition, it allows thermoregulation of the child's body temperature and protects him from possible infections.

Therefore, being aware of the benefits provided by this substance that covers the skin of our little ones at birth, the ideal is to let it be absorbed naturally. When sanitizing the baby these first days, the proper thing would be to wash it very gently with a natural sponge so as not to remove it and dry it with a towel without rubbing.
